Gluten Free may lead to poor gut health

Recently, the British Journal of Nutrition reported that following a gluten-free diet may be detrimental to gut health, which may also affect immune health, according to a new study from the Spanish National Research Council. This was a very small study and definitely needs to be replicated on a larger scale, but it does potentially provide a crucial link between things we already know: That folks with celiac disease are susceptible to leaky gut and candida, which might be why many celiacs report feeling great on the GF diet for years, then start feeling bad again (like moi). Read the story here.

If you are new to being gluten free, just focus on becoming comfortable with purchasing and preparing GF foods. Don't panic! Once that becomes second nature (and, in time, it will), then take a look at the bigger picture. Making multiple changes can get overwhelming fast, so concentrate on one at a time.
